What Courses Does Metis Offer?

If you’re looking for a fresh start in data science, Metis is the place for you. Even if you don’t have any experience with data, the Metis prep courses will bring you up to speed on the math and Python concepts you need to know.

If you do have data experience, you can apply for the bootcamps directly. Metis also offers short courses to help data experts upskill in specific aspects of data science.

Data Analytics – Online

At six weeks, the Metis Data Analytics Bootcamp is the shortest and most inexpensive option offered. But it still teaches students how to analyze data while helping them build a portfolio to show prospective employers.

Over the course of six weeks, students learn how to use Python and SQL to web scrape, plot linear regression, and analyze business data before learning how to present data, manage projects, and understand the ethical implications of their data.

Data Science – Online

The 10-week Metis Data Science Bootcamp is a more in-depth version of the Data Analytics course, adding new concepts in a longer format. Students start by learning the same tools from the Data Analytics Bootcamp over the course of six weeks.

Through the course of four additional weeks, they learn about machine learning classification, natural language processing, and unsupervised learning.

Data Science & Engineering – Online

This 10-week data science course differs from the previous courses by equipping students to work as data engineers instead of data scientists or data analysts. To that end, this bootcamp removes the business data analysis, ethics, and presentation elements from the curriculum.

Students learn about advanced coding and cloud computing along with big data to prepare them to build the systems that data analysts and scientists use to view data and draw conclusions.

Data Science & Machine Learning – Online

This 14-week course adds a deeper focus on machine learning tools on top of the data science curriculum. Students learn everything from the data science curriculum, but at the end of 10 weeks, they switch to the machine learning modules.

Students spend two weeks on deep learning fundamentals like neural networks and sequence modeling. Then, they shift gears to lessons in advanced coding, cloud computing, and big data in the final two weeks.

Short Immersive Courses – Online

These courses help students upskill in a specific data science or machine learning concept in two weeks. The topics, including deep learning fundamentals, exploratory data analysis, and linear regression, are standalone modules from the longer bootcamps.

How to Get Accepted Into Metis

Metis calls its Data Science Bootcamp selective, but it offers every student a fair chance. Potential Metis applicants have a robust slate of prep courses to help them prepare for the thorough technical challenges they will face during the application process.

Metis Application Process

Metis follows a three-step application process to evaluate prospective students.

First, you’ll submit your online application, which is then reviewed by the admissions committee. The application covers your work and educational background, technical skills, and goals after graduation.

If your application moves forward, the admissions team will invite you to a non-technical interview which lasts for 30 minutes. This interview helps Metis determine if you’re a good personal fit for the program and if it can help you meet your goals.

If you advance to the final round, you’ll be invited to complete a technical challenge covering algebra, calculus, probability, statistics, and Python over the course of three hours. You’ll learn within two business days if you’ve been accepted into the program.

Metis Interview Questions

Throughout the three-stage process, Metis assesses applicants on six points:

  • Experience in programming
  • Experience in math
  • Communication skills
  • Personality traits of curiosity, grit, and passion
  • Motivation to join the bootcamp
  • Potential overall fit within Metis.

How Can You Prepare for Metis?

Metis offers three prep courses that build on top of each other in sequence. Taking these three courses in order gives candidates everything they need to pass the technical portion of the Metis application process.

  • Admissions Prep – This free, self-paced introductory course gives students a primer on the math concepts they’ll need throughout the program while introducing them to the basics of Python. Students will cover linear algebra, calculus, probability, and statistics, which are the only math concepts they’ll need at the start of the program.
  • Beginner Python and Math – This part-time course builds on the Admissions Prep course by opening up advanced Python tools like NumPy, Pandas, and Matplotlib. This course completely covers the Python basics needed to ace the application as well. There are no prerequisites for attending this course, but the Admissions Prep course is a good way to learn about these concepts ahead of time.
  • Introduction to Data Science – This is the most advanced course of the three, showing students basic data science, machine learning, and coding concepts and other tech that they’ll need in the bootcamp process. This course only partially covers the math and Python tools from previous prep courses, so you’ll need that groundwork established before delving into this one.

Is Metis Worth It?

Metis is worth it if you’re sure that you want to go into a data science career. Besides the cutting-edge curriculum, students get access to career support services that include mock interviews and more. Graduates can also take advantage of the vast network of hiring partners that Metis works with.

But Metis is solely for people that want to start working in data. If you’re interested in other computer science fields like UX/UI design and software engineering, Metis won’t be able to help you.

Does Metis Offer a Job Guarantee?

Metis does not offer a job guarantee for any of its programs.

Should You Apply to Metis?

If you’re interested in learning about data science from experts with years of industry experience, then Metis could be right for you. At this time, Metis courses are only available for applicants in 33 states of the US, so you should check their website to ensure your state is covered.

Keep in mind that you’ll only learn the Python skills at Metis you need for conducting data science operations. If you’re interested in other computer science fields, you may need to build up your Python skills elsewhere.
