Hi everyone. I recently graduated from the San Diego Code School. Before attended SDCS I was an absolute beginner and had no experience in coding at all. After I finish the program I’m able to build a full stack web application. The curriculum focuses on learning MERN stack (MongoDB, Express, React, Node.js) and it also covers data structure, testing and deployment. I highly recommend anyone looking for a career transit to study in a physical classroom than online program. Besides you will be more focused in the classroom you are able to ask the instructor Michael when you get stuck and learn from him how to debug. You will also have opportunity to pair program with other students and practice communication skills. At the end of the curriculum there is a three weeks long final project and I was teamed up with another student to build a customer portal for a local digital marketing agency. That was a great learning experience not only for learning how to build a full stack web application from scratch but also learning Agile project management and GitHub workflow. Michael is the instructor and he is very knowledgable and also involved a lot in the local tech community which is super helpful for the job searching.

Learning how to code truly challenges you to understand how it is you learn. It helps you to develop problem solving, and critical thinking skills. My journey to becoming a web developer has taken some time, but I’ve be fortunate to be able to work with very knowledgable and patient instructors here at the San Diego Code School. At SDCS, they offer online classes as well as in person, full time and part time. The flexibility in the schedule meant a lot to me because I still had to work. To anyone considering learning how to code, I say do it. and I recommend SDCS.

*UPDATE—- I recently began a career at Red Hat, and am now ALREADY making over 150% more than I was before. Thank you SDCS!*
Why is San Diego Code School (SDCS) the best code camp in San Diego? The cutting technology stack you will learn, the access to a career network, the intimacy of the classroom- with instructors that are able to help you in real time in those moments you feel stuck, the camaraderie of fellow students who share your goals, instructors who want you to get that job and not just stand on the other side of a transaction, and a unique North County location. Simply put, SDCS delivers a ‘coding education’ that no other school in San Diego of any sort (code school or traditional university) offers, even if they wanted to.
The passion of the faculty is genuine. It’s in the moments when you encounter adversity (trust me there is plenty, this curriculum isn’t sugar coated) when you realize how important it is to have instructors that care about your success. It’s not a job to them. It’s a mission. Personally, I started this school with minimum exposure to HTML, CSS, and JavaScript. It was once magic to me to simply change the colors of text on a screen. By the end of this school, I was creating full-stack applications that had responsive layouts, integrated databases, login and authentication functionality, automated tests, and were deployed on the internet all while using Agile methods.
It used to be overwhelming to contemplate where to even begin when it came to learn how to code. Now, I feel empowered to say I have a new set of skills as well as a newfound confidence in being able to learn additional things on my own, after having finished my education at SDCS. Truth be told, anyone can teach themselves to code. The information is readily available on the internet. But this just makes things so much easier! Being lead by industry professionals that mentor you, telling you what is useful to learn/implement, and perhaps most importantly- what is not, is an invaluable resource that will jumpstart a rewarding and fulfilling career. If you are thinking about a code school, I can’t recommend SDCS enough! They have changed my life and I will forever be grateful to them!

Honestly this program was pretty life altering since being a HS student I didn’t have much drive or determination or really knew what I was going to do. But after attending this course I learned a lot about coding in general which has helped shaped what I am doing now and what I plan on doing in the future. In this program to keep it short, a lot of the curriculum is JS based with a lot of emphasis on some pretty popular frameworks and libraries such as React.js or Node.js and also a decent amount of focusing on database work which is really crucial in this field. After the program I was able to get a job as a remote software developer in Los Angeles and have been working ever since. This just goes to show how one opportunity can change your life. It should be noted that you should be a determined person and someone willing to commit there will power to learn as much as possible to help with future job outlooks.

I started off by learning to code on my own at home. And while that gave me a good base of knowledge, I knew that I needed to put myself in a good learning environment in order to take my skills to the next level. SDCS was the answer to my problem. This school doesn’t hand hold you through the learning process and that’s a good thing. It pushes you to build research and critical thinking skills that will help you in your career for decades to come. It gives you a great preparation for a career in programming. You will get a comprehensive education in HTML, CSS, JavaScript, React, Node, Express, Mongo and SQL. I think the best thing I’ve learned though is the ability to communicate well. Being able to communicate technically is critical to getting a job in the industry. I highly recommend SDCS. Just do it!

At a San Diego tech meetup, I heard about a free program offered by SDCS that provided guidance for people searching for an entry level programming position. I learned programming at a different code school that lacked career services, so I was excited to hear that SDCS was willing to support me for free. A few weeks after the job hunt training session taught by Mike, I received my first offer for a full-time programming position. I appreciate Mike at SDCS looking out for me!
